Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
As we celebrate Christmas this year, with hearts filled with wonder at the mystery of the Lord’s nativity, we also mark the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea in which the Church, guided by the Holy Spirit, proclaimed that Jesus is “God from God, Light from Light, True God from True God.” At Christmas this is not simply a line of a creed, but the beating heart of the season. When the bishops at Nicaea defended the truth that Jesus is fully divine, it was not just a point of abstract theology but it was to safeguard what we celebrate at Christmas — that in Christ, God emptied himself and became fully human. The same God who created the stars now reaches for us with tiny infant hands. The same God who holds all things in existence now sleeps in a manger. The same God who is beyond all time has been born in time and space.
Into a world that had separated itself from God, “God from God” enters in order to draw us back to Himself. Into a world weighed down by division and darkness, “Light from Light,” has dawned and “darkness has not overcome it” (Jn. 1:5). Into a world beset with uncertainty and searching for meaning, “True God, from True God” has entered.
The Child of Bethlehem is the Eternal Son who has come into this world so that we might become children of God. Through the grace of our Baptism, we are reborn and enter into the life of that Child of Bethlehem, the Eternal Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. And through our Baptism, the Light of Christ now burns within each of us.
May you receive the light of Christ with renewed hope, and may you reflect that light with renewed joy. May your homes be places of peace and your families renewed in love. May nations strive to pursue the common good. May the Light of Christ shine upon our diocese and Church and unite us ever more deeply in the love of Christ.

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo:
Mientras celebramos la Navidad este año, con corazones llenos de admiración ante el misterio de la natividad del Señor, también conmemoramos el 1700º aniversario del Concilio de Nicea, en el que la Iglesia, guiada por el Espíritu Santo, proclamó que Jesús es “Dios de Dios, Luz de Luz, Dios Verdadero de Dios Verdadero”. En Navidad, esto no es simplemente una frase de un credo, sino el corazón palpitante de la temporada. Cuando los obispos de Nicea defendieron la verdad de que Jesús es plenamente divino, no se trataba solo de un punto de teología abstracta, sino para salvaguardar lo que celebramos en Navidad – que, en Cristo, Dios se despojó de Sí mismo y se hizo plenamente humano. El mismo Dios que creó las estrellas ahora nos alcanza con unas manitas de niño. El mismo Dios que mantiene todas las cosas en existencia ahora duerme en un pesebre. El mismo Dios Eterno, que transciende todo tiempo, ha nacido en el tiempo y en el espacio.
En un mundo que se había separado de Dios, “Dios de Dios” entra para atraernos de nuevo hacia Él. En un mundo agobiado por la división y la oscuridad, “Luz de Luz” ha amanecido y “las tinieblas no la han vencido” (Juan 1:5). En un mundo abrumado por la incertidumbre y en búsqueda de sentido, “Dios Verdadero, de Dios Verdadero” ha entrado.
El Niño de Belén es el Hijo Eterno que ha venido a este mundo para que podamos llegar a ser hijos de Dios. Por la gracia de nuestro Bautismo, renacemos y entramos en la vida de ese Niño de Belén, el Hijo Eterno, Jesucristo nuestro Señor. Y por nuestro Bautismo, la Luz de Cristo ahora arde dentro de cada uno de nosotros.
Que reciban la Luz de Cristo con esperanza renovada, y que reflejen esa luz con alegría renovada. Que sus hogares sean lugares de paz y sus familias se renueven en el amor. Que las naciones se esfuercen por alcanzar el bien común. Que la Luz de Cristo ilumine nuestra diócesis y nuestra Iglesia y nos una cada vez más profundamente en el amor de Cristo.
