Parish Social Ministry – “Becoming a Community of
Salt & Light” Training Program
How Catholic Charities Helps
This training program involves
seven, three-hour sessions. The training is open to those interested in
furthering the Social Mission of the Church. The training seeks a balance of
reflection and action.
The program incorporates three
basic elements: prayer and faith sharing; Catholic Social Teaching; and skill
development for faith-oriented action. Prayer and faith sharing are essential
for remembering who we are, listening to God’s call, and recognizing that only
through God’s help are we able to act according to God’s will. Both prayer and
faith sharing provide the personal basis for action. An introduction to
Catholic Social Teaching offers the historical, scriptural, and theological
basis for social concerns and action. From the Old Testament, to the Gospel, to
recent church teachings, the Catholic Church - and ALL its members - are
called to do God’s will to help build the Kingdom.
Finally, on a practical level,
the training offers basic skill development to enable people of good will to
put their faith into action.
Drawn from the needs echoed
from parish to parish, the training focuses on such skills as volunteer
recruitment; networking; leadership development; issue identification and
response; and program planning. The training reflects the underlying purpose of
parish social ministry, essentially to build community and to respond to
societal injustices. Class sizes should be 10+ individuals.
